20/20 VISION

Our eyesight is so precious.  As I grow older, I’ve noticed that I have to hold things at arms length to read them.  I squint to try to see the fine print.  Dim lighting makes reading much more difficult.  When you don’t see clearly, you can misjudge what you think you are seeing and you can also miss a lot of details.  Thankfully most of us can remedy this problem by a visit to our eye doctor who will exam us, diagnose the problem and fit us with glasses to assist us in seeing clearly.  From time to time we may need to revisit him and go through the process again because our vision has changed since his last diagnosis.

The same is true with spiritual matters.  We walk about in darkness, running into things, making poor judgments, until the light is turned on.  When we come to Jesus, who is the Light of the world, He transfers us out of the kingdom of darkness and into the kingdom of light.  As we continue to walk in the light of His truth, our pathways will be made clear.  The Bible says God’s Word is a lamp for our feet and a light for our path.  We will see our life’s circumstances through the wisdom of God’s Word and be able to make decisions based upon those truths.

The Bible also says, “My people are destroyed or perish for a lack of knowledge (another version says a lack of vision)”.  Because men love darkness rather than the light (John 3:19), we must choose truth, which leads us to the light. (John 3:21)  When we choose darkness, we move into a place of confusion, poor discernment and decision making.  Many Christians today are walking out their lives without having received a vision from the Lord.  Jer.29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

Some people never go get their eyes checked – they just continue to squint, everything is a blur.  They miss out on many of life’s pleasures because they cannot see clearly.  Lack of vision dulls your senses and puts you in situations you should not be in.  Sampson is a good example of someone who had awesome prophecies given over him by an angel when he was still in his mother’s womb.  He had a powerful anointing on his life, but he had no vision.  He forfeited the high calling for his life by his lack of discipline and vision.  We can miss the Lord’s best for us by careless living.

By our lack of vision, we can wrongly affect many other lives.  If Sampson had had clear vision, he could have totally delivered the children of Israel from the bondage they were under.  Joseph, who we mentioned last week, on the other hand, continued to conduct himself as though he were already in the place of rulership while still in some very adverse circumstances which lasted many years.  In time, his faithfulness and integrity placed him where he had seen in his dream many years earlier, positively affecting the lives of many thousands of people.

When we are unable to see clearly concerning the direction for our lives, sometimes it takes another, more mature person, who can help us to see the situation from a different perspective.  Sometimes the “doctor” is our pastor or another mature believer, sometimes it is a book which sheds “light” on the subject we cannot see clearly for ourselves.  Spending time in God’s Word, which has so much wisdom for our daily lives, will help us to get things in proper perspective.

I love what Psalm 119:97-99 says:  “Oh how I love your law!  It is my meditation all the day.  You through Your commandments make me wiser than my enemies, for they are ever with me.  I have more understanding than all my teachers, for Your testimonies are my meditation.”  Now that is 20/20 vision!
